Experts Available to Discuss Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Forms of Dementia

The Copper Ridge Institute is the nation’s premier research and education entity for the evaluation and care of Alzheimer’s patients. The Institute is a joint effort of Copper Ridge, Maryland’s only residential facility specializing in dementia patients, and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Institute faculty are internationally known researchers who continue to develop a Model of Care recognized throughout the United States. They have trained thousands of health care professionals, caregivers, and family members of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. Below is a list of experts whom reporters can contact regarding health and medical stories.

Jason Brandt, PhD

Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Professor of Neurology, and Director of Psychology in the School of Medicine.  Dr. Brandt also serves as the Director of the Cortical Function Laboratory at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and is the Director of Research at The Copper Ridge Institute.

Dr. Brandt has published more than 250 articles and book chapters on Alzheimer’s and dementia. His areas of specialty are:

  • Memory and other cognitive disorders among patients with Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias
  • The rate and pattern of progression in Alzheimer’s disease
  • Dementia syndromes
  • Genetic testing for neuropsychiatric disorders
  • Improved methods for neuropsychological assessment

Alva S. “Buzz” Baker, MD

Dr. Baker, a certified geriatrician, has been medical director for EMA since 1980 and is the Executive Director of the Copper Ridge Institute. His specialty areas are:

  • Medical care of the person with dementia
  • Managing problem behaviors
  • Care and support for caregivers

Cynthia Steele, RN, MPH

Mrs. Steele is a nationally recognized expert specializing in the nursing care of persons with cognitive disorders and their families. In addition to serving on numerous editorial boards, she has co-authored many peer reviewed papers on dementia care and research. Her areas of specialty include:

  • Training caregivers to give effective care
